What are ACH Transfers and How do they Work?

What are ACH Transfers and How do they Work?

by JJS Global | January, 2025

In 2024, the ACH Network processed 31.45 million payments, which equated to around $80.1 trillion dollars.
Despite its massive footprint, many businesses overlook ACH transfers as a straightforward, cost-effective alternative to credit card payments. In this guide, we’ll break down what ACH transfers are, how they work, and why they could be the key to reducing your payment processing fees.

What is an ACH Transfer?

ACH Transfer stands for Automated Clearing House Transfer, and is essentially an electronic, bank-to-bank money transfer processed through the Automated Clearing House Network.

What is the Automated Clearing House?

It’s an electronic network in the U.S. that enables banks and financial institutions to handle batches of credit and debit transactions. ACH is how money securely travels between bank accounts without the costs and complications that can come with credit cards or paper checks.

What are ACH Transfers Commonly Used for?

Payroll – Employers commonly use ACH for direct deposits.

Bill Payments – Utility bills, insurance premiums, and subscription services often run on ACH.

Person-to-Person Transfers – Popular payment apps rely on ACH “behind the scenes” for account-to-account transfers.

How do ACH Transfers Work?

1. Initiation

A business or individual requests an ACH debit or credit from their bank to move funds.

Example: You schedule a recurring payment pull from a customer’s checking account for a monthly subscription.

2. Batch Processing

ACH transactions are processed in batches, typically multiple times each business day. Depending on your bank and the type of ACH (same day, next day, etc.), settlement windows can vary.

3. Clearing and Settlement

Your bank (the Originating Depository Financial Institution) sends transaction data to the ACH operator (often the Federal Reserve). The ACH operator sorts and routes transactions to the Receiving Bank, which credits or debits the appropriate account. Settlement usually completes within 1–3 business days, although Same Day ACH options exist for faster turnaround.

What are the Key Advantages of ACH Transfers?

Lower Fees

Compared to credit or debit card transactions, ACH transfers carry minimal transaction costs—sometimes mere cents per transaction. This is especially beneficial for recurring payments or high-value purchases, where card processing fees can add up quickly.

Predictable Cash Flow

By scheduling ACH transactions on specific dates, you gain clearer control over incoming funds. This predictability helps with budgeting, payroll, and managing operating expenses.

Reduced Reliance on Paper Checks

ACH replaces the need for physical checks, cutting down on printing, mailing, and reconciliation time. It also lowers the chance of checks getting lost or stolen.

Fewer Chargebacks

While insufficient funds or account errors can occur, the risk of traditional chargebacks—like those from fraudulent card use—is generally lower with ACH.

Are there any potential drawbacks using ACH Transfers?

Processing Speed

Standard ACH isn’t instant. If you need near-immediate fund availability, Same Day ACH may be an option, but it can incur higher fees and has earlier cutoff times.

Bank Account Information

Customers must share checking account details, which requires trust. Make sure you’re securely storing and handling all data in compliance with NACHA regulations.

Returns and Insufficient Funds

While not the same as a card “chargeback,” ACH returns can occur if an account lacks sufficient funds or if the customer revokes authorization. Returns can lead to additional fees.
